Eva and Arthur

My name is Eva, I’m 25 and this is my second year with the CMBV. Being a Chantre at the CMBV helps us embark on a professional career thanks to the various courses we can take. At the beginning we have private lessons to improve our skills, teaching for example vocal technique or conducting. After that we have group lessons to study languages like German or Italian, as well as baroque dance and declamation, so we can continue to learn what was done in the Royal Chapel at the time. And lastly we spend a lot of time doing choral work and stage productions which allow us to have partnerships with Château de Versailles Spectacles and other establishments that help us find work later on. Being a singer today is mainly a wonderful opportunity, given that at the time it wasn’t possible for women to sing in the Royal Chapel. So historically it was actually less interesting because one wants to re-transcribe the male voices the way they were at the time. But it’s good to show that our voices are as important as the male voices. I feel really lucky to be able to work in a place like this. The CMBV’s partnership with the Palace of Versailles is a truly incredible opportunity. We can sing and learn conducting too. The fact we can come here regularly is very moving.
My name is Arthur, I’m 13 years old in Year 10. I’m a Page [choirboy] at the CMBV. Every afternoon we go to the CMBV in Versailles to sing 17th century baroque music. Some Thursdays during the year we perform concerts at 5.30 pm in the Royal Chapel at the Palace of Versailles. I’ve been a choirboy since Year 7 so that makes it 4 years. I really enjoy reminding people what music was like at that time, and the way we can sing and express yourself through music. At the moment we’re doing Les leçons de ténèbres by François Couperin which I find really beautiful. What I find incredible is that the Palace of Versaillesis is one of the most famous and most beautiful palaces in the world. Louis XIV reigned there and he was really well known. We are really lucky to be able to sing in the Royal Chapel. I feel we don’t realise that we are in a wonderful, really famous and magnificent place.
